Battling for Hearts and Minds in Homefront: The Revolution

I’ve been watching Homefront: The Revolution’s development with a beady little eye. For starters, it’s a sequel nobody really wanted. The first game wasn’t very good at all – even if its premise – A look at an America lost to an invading force – was.

The game had been in a bit of a development pickle for ages. The developer of the original game, Kaos, was shuttered by the now defunct THQ, with development duties moving on to Crytek UK. Crytek – stuck with internal difficulties of its own – sold the IP to publisher Deep Silver’s parent Company Koch Media. Crytek UK was closed, though all staff were transferred to the newly forged Dambuster Studios.

This, then, represents the culmination of that long, arduous development history. And it’s an interesting, sophisticated shooter. It’s a game that tries to blend the gunplay from Far Cry, with the ambiance of something like Metro 2033. We’ll have to see if it works as intended on May 17, when the game is out.

Here’s a look at the game’s latest trailer – which, cheesy narration aside – looks pretty good! You’ll have to win over the hearts and minds of a people caught in an uprising to Make America Great Again!

“Playing as freedom fighter Ethan Brady, the ultimate goal in Homefront is to inspire the people to rise up against the brutal military occupation and ignite the revolution.

‘Hearts and Minds’ represents the state of uprising across the oppressed Yellow Zones of occupied Philadelphia, and will increase as the player performs acts of resistance, such as destroying KPA in-frastructure.

The open world dynamically transforms around the player as Hearts and Minds increases – a once cowed civilian population will join the player in acts of defiance, and the entire Zone will evolve from a state of lockdown to open revolution on the streets.”
