As a community, we gamers have a bit of an attention span problem. You see HEY LOOK A SQUIRREL! Heeeheeheee look at its fluffy tail! I’m gonna get ya!
…Where was I? Oh right, attention spans. Anyway, there’s a massive emphasis on games reaching a sales target within their first week of release. And that’s not exactly a healthy attitude for the industry. Not only does it result in rushed titles, overworked development teams and games going gold long before they’re actually properly finished, but it also quite regularly results in some performance anxiety. According to my friends at least for reals.
With most video games becoming platforms for a long-term investment of DLC and online action, that FOMO behaviour is harmful to long-term success. Something that EA is taking a stab at with Titanfall 2. Easily the best shooter of the year, Titanfall 2 was released in the middle of an FPS sammich. One slice of whole-wheat bread was made up of Battlefield 1, the other slice a tasty dosage of Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare.
And as you’d imagine, debut sales weren’t exactly on fire. But at a UBS conference in San Francisco, EA CFO Blake Jorgensen spoke about the bigger picture of supporting Titanfall 2 over the long run. “We remind people we’re building a franchise with Titanfall, so it’s not about the first day of sales or the first week of sales, it’s about the long run,” Jorgensen said via GameSpot.
We’ll do a lot of things with Titanfall to continue to build engagement. We’re going to give away a substantial amount of free extra digital content going into next year. And really build the franchise around people and engaging with the title. Because everyone who has played it just loves it.
And that’s good. A game needs to survive and thrive over months, not days. It’s a focus that should lead to games getting more time to be polished up, while the free DLC bait lures in more fans. Everyone wins. Except for that bastard who rode my Titan into oblivion, because that bastard forgot about my nuclear options.
